About David MacDonald

Dr. MacDonald graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed his orthopedic residency at Michigan State University, and completed a fellowship of the hand, upper extremity, and microsurgery in Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. MacDonald is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in surgery of the hand and upper extremity. He spent two years stationed in Okinawa, Japan serving as the sole hand and upper extremity specialist in the Western Pacific. He was honored as a recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his service. He then moved his practice to Midland, Texas and while there, he served as team physician for the Midland Rockhounds; a minor league affiliate of the Oakland A’s organization.

Dr. MacDonald is a Professor of Orthopedics at VCOM of Auburn. He is also frequently asked to consult the Auburn Athletic Department’s Sports Medicine Staff with their athletes’ Hand/Wrist complaints.

Dr. MacDonald is a member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, Georgia Orthopaedic Society, and the Muscogee County Medical Society He is licensed in Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Dr. MacDonald is currently practicing at our Dothan, Auburn, Albany and Columbus Clinics.

I was late for my appt. My spouse had just had his 6th heart attack last week and i was in pain and upset. I'm never late..burst into tears. Damion came out and with remarkable kindness calmed me down and dr. MaDonald stayed with me longer, with his warmth i stopped the crying and felt better. Damion has unique way of helping patients feel better. He needs award. Dr. MacDonald was not upset at me for being late. Hughston has has the best people. Im still embarrassed but they made my week with the kindness and info they provided at a traumatic time. Thank you both. I see Dr Macdonald again and stay with hughston for all the things i need done ahead. Im blessed today by those two who saw i was struggling.

I was in a car accident and after back and forth a with a different facility, I made an appointment with Dr McDonald as I use the facility for other orthopedic issues. Dr McDonald was awesome during our first appointment. He was my second opinion for my injured wrist I received after a recent fall. He was very personable, thorough, and never talked down to me. The first doctor looked at the xray and MRI and stated no fractures or ligament damage. Dr McDonald looked at the same xray and MRI and determined I did have a fracture and a torn ligament. I'm very fortunate to have found Dr McDonald and I feel he will have me on the road to a complete recovery. If you need an amazing hand doctor/surgeon he's your man!

Just had surgery and Dr. MacDonald is an awesome surgeon, I was super nervous since my last surgery had a lot of complications and I did not want to go through that again, but with Dr. MacDonald he made my experience wonderful and explained everything and had a great sense of humor so the environment wasn’t stressful. I came in for a cortisone shot in my hand for a trigger finger. As always Dr MacDonald is very professional and has a great personality. Let me tell you that Hughston is 2nd to when it comes patient care. From the time I arrived, Amber and Tee got me in as quick as possible to see Dr. McDonald. David's staff was supportive and anxious to help determine my ailments. But even away from the Clinic, I met another girl that works for another doctor, Tameka L. who visited with me in a Taco line waiting to be served. I was so amazed by the good people working with Hughston Clinic. Not only do they treat their patients right in the facility, they actually live it in public honorably. Those assets just don't happen. You have to lead by example and it truly was recognizable to me. I would recommend Hughston to anyone needing Orthopedic care. Too Sha Hughston.

I had a really bad Compound arm fracture After falling off my horse. Dr. MacDonald performed the surgery to repair both arm bones. I am two months postoperative and thus far, while there is still healing going on, I am pain-free and had no post-surgery complications. He is very good about answering my millions of questions as well as explaining the surgical and post-surgical choices and options.

I have a background in the medical field, as both a Combat Medic, and later a Nurse (med/surg). I did not let anyone know. The receptionists are professional and efficient, the nursing staff are friendlier than most Drs offices I've been to, they're knowledgable in more areas than just orthopaedics, which is great. Most people have a tendency to focus on whatever area they specialize in and allow their knowledge in other areas to fall by the wayside. I did not see this here. Now, as for Dr. MacDonald himself, having worked with numerous doctors in general over the years, and surgeons specifically, I was pleasantly surprised. He is quick to smile, answers all of your questions, and is quick and efficient. Not to say he rushes, he absolutely does not. My wife had additional questions, and needed more indepth explanations. He took his time answering them, and explaining in great detail, without making her feel dumb.

Dr. David McDonald has been my orthopedic doctor and surgeon for 3 years. He is treat both of my shoulders. He is a wonderful doctor. He is so easy to talk to. He takes the time to listen to me and always makes me laugh. Every one I know is afraid of the steroid shots. His actually feel good when I9in pain. He knows how to give them. I have a pacemaker located in the left side of my chest. Dr. McDonald operated on my left shoulder. He toke extra care and extra time to make sure everything went as it should. I recovered quickly and I believe doing my physical therapy at the Hughston Clinic Physical Therapy office played a vital part. So THANK YOU SO MUCH Dr. David McDonald and your wonderful staff!

I was so happy with Dr McDonald. I had suffered for more than 2 years with an elbow joint that was completely eaten away with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had a Dr in Macon who completely gave me the run around on doing joint replacement for more than 9 months all to find out he only offered 1 kind of joint and it would never have worked for the replacement that my arm needed. My Rheumatologist gave me a referral to Dr McDonald and within 2 weeks I was in surgery. I am so happy I came to Hughston Clinic, Dr McDonald is the greatest. I have not been able to use this arm for a very very long time. So happy with the progress I've made in these past 6 weeks.

For nearly three years after having a spinal fusion of my C 3-7 vertebrae, I continued to have excruciating nerve pain and loss of feeling in my arm, fingers and hand. I sought out medical advice on multiple occasions to get to the root of the problem. There was no help in sight, so I continued to suffer. My quality of life and pain level was depressing. I asked God to lead me to the right place to seek one more opinion. Since we had success with the doctors at The Hughston Clinic before with my husband, I decided maybe they could help me. Dr. Macdonald was able to give me a diagnosis, recommend the correct surgical procedure to get relief from my pain and did an amazing job of following up with compassionate aftercare. Start to finish, I am about five weeks out post surgery. My nerve pain is diminished, and other than post surgery recovery, I am one happy camper!! Fantastic surgeon and a tremendous asset to the Hughston Clinic , We are very lucky to have him in the southeastern area ! He has performed 2surgeries on me to date : for right thumb and wrist as well as a severely busted up collarbone that had been shattered in a ATV accident. He is very good to work with one scheduling as well as explaining in great detail how the surgery is going both before and after the procedure.
